Harbourside Market has a sustainability policy to reduce waste wherever we can in the marketplace. The market’s biggest challenge is to reduce the use of plastic bags in the marketplace. Selected Harbourside Market Stallholders in partnership with Onslow College are preparing to launch a twelve week waste reduction programme with ten selected stallholders. This initiative will be run as a pilot programme with Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) Climate Change Consultancy. The objective of the programme will be for students to work with selected stallholders to:
- Identify the food supply chain for the stall e.g. where the produce comes from
- Identify ways to minimise waste in the market
The programme will be the first of its kind in New Zealand and is a common sustainability programme in many US and Canadian markets. Ten of our finest growers and food producers will work with students from Onslow College to define waste reduction opportunities with the support and guidance from PwC Climate Change Consultant. The programme is scheduled to commence in early November.
